| | Woodspirit- "Wild Thang" Due to a million excuses which mainly boil down to a full time job, the scouts, and my love for traveling I haven’t been as active here in the “club” during the last couple of months the way I’d like to so I’ve got a lot of catching up to do! Thought that I’d post a few pics of an ordinary woodspirit that I actually began last winter and like a lot of things in my life, which includes reading a good book, it sat unfinished staring me in the eye day after day until I finally finished it. The wood is a chunk of sourwood that I cut exactly one year ago so it had only been seasoning on the porch for a few months when I began the carving. Partially seasoned wood is my favorite for carving because it works so nicely with my knives and chisels. Yeah, the eyes are slanted one way, the nose twisted in another direction, then finally the tongue swishing back with the eyes. Hey, I appropriately named it “Wild Thang” so give me a break. I decided to go with the rounded style of eyes since they seem to project the wild, far-out look that I was seeking along with that long snake-like tongue. I finished it with watered down acrylics except for the hair that I did with only boiled linseed oil. I really liked the yellowing tone of the hair that the linseed oil brought about. The linseed oil also brought out the beautiful red colors in the inner bark which outlines the woodspirit. Sure hope that "Wild Thang" makes your heart sang!!!

| | Re: Woodspirit- "Wild Thang" Dave,
Wild Thang fits it! He looks like he was just standing there in the woods minding his own business being a tree, when a big bear sauntered up too near and relieved himself! Ha! I think he's great! (hope I didn't offend anyone, but bears and every other creature answer nature's call!)
I was wondering where you were a few days ago, and figured you were either still on a long walk (Apalachian Trail or one you hadn't explored yet) or back, digging deep into teaching a new batch of kids.
Good to have you back!

| | Re: Woodspirit- "Wild Thang" Ash....ya, that song goes way back....ever hear of the Troggs? They were a Beatles like group that came out with it back in the late 60's. 1968 I think, or there about. Some great music back then, a great time to be a teenager.

| | | Re: Woodspirit- "Wild Thang" Dave, great pictures to go along with a great carving, glad to hve you back in the chips again.
Like yourself, I get lost in alot of family or business work too and end up going a few days or even a week or two without picking up a knife. But hey, when that time allows, nothing beats being in tune with your wood, those are hours of enjoyment. | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
