Question Woodland Challenge

Hi Guys
Just curious if anyone else took an interest in Geoff Kings work in the latest issue of WCI. I did some messing around and did a small brooch of a Gecko. I hacked out last night. He's not done quite yet I plan on doing some finishing and painting on it too. If any of you have or plan to maybe we can all put it in one spot and share it with everyone.
Mel

Hi Pal, I saw Geoff Kings article too, but haven't tried anything yet. The idea of using stones really got my interest as hubby collections Apache Tears and tumbles them--thoughts of building a pendant around a nice tear would be kinda cool.
Hope you will carve more of these and you did a great job.
Kathy
Your Gecko turned out really nice you should do some more.

Hi Mel,

You did a very nice job on a critter I enjoy carving too. I've been carving them on my diamond willow sticks and just burned one on a yucca I'm working on.

Kathy, I saw a jar full of tumbled Apache tears in a shop out by the Mojave Desert years ago and wanted to go find my own right then and there, but didn't. My wife is really into collecting rocks, the non-sparkling kinds, too. LOL.

I want to do a walking stick with a stone in it also. I bought some stones a while back to do that and don't remember where I stuck them.

Mottles,
That would be "way cool", as my grandkids might say. I have mixed polished stones with bark wood spirits with good results. Your idea sounds like a winner.

I use yucca and sotol stalks for making walking sticks. I bought some tumbled turquoise at an auction for $5. It is just the right size to plug the holes made by carpenter bees in the stalks . MelNM will know these bees. They also make holes in garden tool handles if left outside. Sorry, no photos because they all get sold.

If there is more than one hole, I don't collect the stalk because the whole stalk might be hollow and not strong enough to be used as a walking stick.

"way cool" on all of the above ideas! Would love to see all you guyses stuff(CA for you all!) I put stuff I collect in safe places, so safe I can't find them either. I have clear quartz crystals( Lake county diamonds) the kids and I collected a couple of decades ago. They would look great in a carving( the crystals, not the kids.) Great ideas, I'm inspired!

These Apache Tears, when you see them unless you knew what they were you'd probably not pay them any mind. They are very black and dull in color, but once polished they are beautiful. We have some that are grayish and when you hold them up to the light they look transparent.
I have some other projects going on right now and other's to do. But, at some point I really do want to carve an Apache Tear Pendant.
By the way these tears take 8 weeks in the tumbler! Thank goodness it's a quite tumbler as it's in the workshop. LOL
Thanks all, for your interest.
Kathy
