I am taking a woodcarving class where we mount our releif carving wood on "support boxes" clamped to worktables. However, I would like to construct a work-support bench for home use that would be sturdy enough to remain stable while using a mallet and also be portable. Being able to rotate my carving piece would be a plus, but not really necessary. Am I being realistic or should I settle for a basic box and clamps? Help!

Welcome to the forum, Robert! Go up to the green bar and click on Search, then enter Wood Carving Bench and you'll see hundreds of messages on the forum about carving benches. Many are specific to relief carving. Claude |

Claude- I tried your search suggestion entering "wood carving bench", but was unable to find anything regarding benches or plans. Am I doing something wrong? Bob

Stupid Computers! Ok, if you put "wood carving bench" , with the quote marks, in the search field, then it will only report messages that have that exact phrase with those exact words in the same order. If you just put in the three words, then it will search for wood woodcarving carving bench wood carving carving bench etc. I just tried it without the quotes and it tells me there are 442 messages. Since a lot of those are probably just with wood or carving, I tried again with just the word bench, and got 500 messages... Then I went back and re-read your question. You're looking for something to primarily hold relief carvings... This time, I pulled down the Search button, then clicked on Advanced Search. In the new page that came up, I entered the words relief bench with not quotes or commas. Bingo! There are several messages that mention those two words. Also, as Ripton points out, when you open one of the messages the search finds for you, always scroll all the way to the bottom and check out the Similar Threads area. I can remember seeing many relief carving benches or holding fixtures that people have developed, so it may take a bit of searching, but the info is there. Or, as Paul suggests, go to your local Borders Bookstore or Barnes and Noble, and pick up the current issue of Wood Carving Illustrated. Claude Last edited by Claude; 03-18-2010 at 11:58 AM. |
