Smokey,
I have never heard a scientific explanation of this phenomenon.
Very interesting; especially the wood movement theory. Â*We all realize that wood can be bent, so that could explain the sticks ability to hop. Â*

Randy,
Your idea of simply blindfolding the stick is insightful to say the least. Â*I think I will put socks over the ends of my wood spirt walking sticks. Â*I wonder if that would affect the woods ability to breathe?

Rick

Rick,
They should be able to breathe if you wash the socks first.

Update:

Each time my stick was 'moved', it was in a direction away from the house. Yesterday morning I looked out and it was on the ground towards the house....

Plus I actually STUCK the end into the ground so that it would take some effort to be moved.

I'm sure it's just a squirrel or neighbors cat chasing the squirrels, but it's become a bit of a game.

I don't think that a squirrel is moving Bobs stick though!!!
