| | Wood Spirit Bench in progress Hi Gang,
If you remember I was commission to do a double tree carving last week BTW it is now finished I posted the final pictures Carver Galleries. I got to thinking because the customer had a couple of benches in her garden. I went home and drew out a schematic of a bench incorperating two wood spirits. Funny how you can become inspired by your own carvings. Anyway I even skipped the gym this morning as I wanted to get going on it. Here is a picture of the right side of the bench just roughed out I will finish it up this weekend. I will keep you posted on the progress of this project as it goes along. I am always looking for new idea's and thought that I would share this one with you.

| | Re: Wood Spirit Bench in progress I love the idea Colin. Now why haven't you considered them before? A functional garden sculpture....what a way to accent and compliment your tree spirit carvings. That would be "some" garden once you had those additions.....magical! I can just hear the childrens comments now!!!
Well done and keep the great ideas flowing.

| | Re: Wood Spirit Bench in progress Wow! I know you said it's not finished, but it has great artistic appeal just like it is! If I hadn't seen your other work, I'd say you should stop here...but you know what you're doing! Can hardly wait to see the progress!

| | Re: Wood Spirit Bench in progress Wow! Have you gone into an afterburner, super-motivated carving mood or what!?! And you even decided to skip the gym... now that's the kind of excitement that gets me motivated. And it appears that spring has come to Ontario.
This is looking like another great project with the added flare of a bench and I appreciate you posting the pictures as it progresses which makes your experience so much more complete for me way down here hundreds and hundreds of miles away from your stomping grounds.
I guess that if I carved the huge projects that you do on a regular basis then I wouldn't have to run, bicycle, or go to the gym either! |

I love the movement in this one. You have captured a definite c-curve through the brows and down into the beard. The left eyebrow being a little larger then the right, the slight offset to the nose line just pull me down into the flowing bend of the beard. Fantastic use of minimual (SP) elements to create a powerful image ... nice way to go!

| | Re: Wood Spirit Bench in progress Nice work as usual Buddy.
I have done a number of benches using 20 inch blocks for the carving and just putting a wide plank on top with a routered edge. I like your idea of a bigger woodspirit to sort of anchor the bench on each side.
I will have to take a picture of the bench I still have at the cottage and post it.

| | Re: Wood Spirit Bench in progress You did that in one day? and missed the gym workout to do it?
Good grief! Two similar to that in a week?
Are you plugged into a power bar source?
I'm not only impressed, I'm intimidated.
Wow.
I also look forward to seeing the pictures of the finished bench....maybe by lunch today?
Holy smoke!

| | Re: Wood Spirit Bench in progress Today is friday second day on the bench. Here is a picture of the left side of the bench(right and left are as you would be sitting on it. This is the second roughout I know it looks a lot like the first but when I am finished them they will look completly different. You will notice that I have the beards and mostaches blowing towards each other I dont know if I am going to like that or should have had them both blowing the same direction. Too late now I will have to live with it. I would appreciate what you think on that. I am working all afternoon so I may have the first one just about finished by tonight if so I will post a picture later today.

| | Re: Wood Spirit Bench in progress Well I worked all day on the bench and have got it down to the final stages. I have included two pictures of both ends of the bench and a picture of how it will look pretty much set up. I am trying to debate whether to put a back on it or not. It is not a problem I have enough cedar boards to do it. I am not just sure if it will be too much. BTW I dont think I mentioned it before but the bench is made out of Eastern White Cedar the logs are 3ft tall and 14 inches wide the board is 52 inches long and three inches thick. Hope to put a little more detail into the carvings tomorrow and stain it then hopefully I can put it together on Sunday.
