Default wood hardness info

Does anyone have a chart or anything about how hard different varieties of wood are? I started my chess set with Ash and am now carving some with Poplar. Poplar is so soft, I don't care for it. I'd love a chart showing a scale of wood hardness so I can find a happy medium.

Derek
I recommend you get a copy of Wood Identification and Uses by Terry Porter. It's got a wealth of info including density and hardness of many different woods. I would also suggest thet you try american walnut or cherry. Both carve well and hold detail.
