Wink Wood Carving Apron

Hello there all! After three weeks I had finally finished an Apron that I've been terribly struggling with. I got the pattern from a wood carving book but when I finished it, it did not work! Would not stay up and kept falling off! So I put it down for a bit. Tried it on one time later and the wife said... you know....if that had a back strap like a bra does it would stay up. We tried a few things and sure enough it stayed up. I could walk around, bend .... whatever. So I sewed those corrections then I saw an apron on line that has a 'bag' like thing in the front that catches the wood shavings. I was like... wow... I could do this inside with the SWMBO not even getting upset! So for the next week I worked on getting that on the apron.

So today it's finally done. You can see aprons such as this online for like 35 bucks but I spent about 22 for it. Better quality too and I'm just thrilled that I MADE IT.

So anyways... just thought I'd share with you a project done. I can post picturers of it if anyone wishes.

No problem. I'll have the wife help with some pictures tonight. The apron is from the book Amazon.com: Easy Woodcarving: Simple Techniques for Carving & Painting Wood (9781565232884): Cyndi Joslyn: Books
but like I said it has some challenges. I'll take pictures of where I changed it and also of the hoop. There are some in the net but I think the quality of the Apron is VERY good. Just needs altering a bit. One thing that she puts on the apron is a leather square, chest high in case of slipping with a tool I suppose. I did not do this.... ummm.... correct me if I'm wrong but if you are worried about slipping a tool and stabbing yourself in the chest, then perhaps carving is not for you... you know.... or at the very least you gotta learn more about using your tools more safely right... Stay tuned

Michael

P.S.

There is another project in there.... a tool roll. I would love to make it but think I'm going to rest a bit with the sewing and start with the carving for a bit.

Wink Re: Wood Carving Apron

Here are some pictures of what I did. I am trying terribly hard to bring it here but to no avail. Flickr: KD8JSQ's Photostream is where it is at. Lets see if you guys can see them. I wrote notes on many of the pictures so it's probably better this way anyways. I'm not sure why the back looks the way it does and that's why this did not work till my wife helped me.... you don't have eyes in the back of your head as much as you would like. The tubing is 3/8 inch thick walled tubing that you would find in the plumbing section at Lowes or Home Depot. I got the quick disconnects there too. The 'bag' is simply three sections sewed together then you sew on a front and back. You can make it any size. If I would to make it again it would probably be smaller, but right now I'm not complaining. You then sew around the bag a fairly large opening so you can fish through the tubing. You make this opening on the front of the apron too where the quick disconnects are. This way you can just disconnect the bag if you want to just use it as an apron.

Can't wait to use it ....hmmm.... maybe tomorrow.
