Can you burn directly through tracing paper onto wood to transfer a pattern? I'm familiar with graphite paper and paper made specifically for this purpose. Just checking to see if it can be done with easily accessible materials. Thanks. |

Most likely you'll start a fire...

Technically you could but then you have a solid outline similar to a coloring book and the burn takes on that look. Plus you'd need to get those lines all the same with no breaks or hot blobs. Very few patterns I've done call for a solid burned outline. When burning a traced on pattern with graphite you have the option to shade around or along those the lines in different tones giving more depth and realistic look to the burn. That's my thoughts on burning in outlines. I'm sure you might get differing opinions. |

Actually, we went ahead and tried it, and it worked beautifully. My husband generally is a carver, not technically a pyrographer. So he's mostly interested in transferring outlines of designs to the wood. He usually does wood burned outlines, carves, and does some color work. So detailed shading isn't an issue. I picked up a pad of common tracing paper from Wal Mart. He taped the design onto the wood and used a Detail Master Excalibre set to between 6 and 7. Here are some pictures of the results: ![]() He did get some "blobs" as one poster mentioned, mostly due to me having him in a somewhat awkward position while I shot a couple pictures. Sorry, guys, no fires. No more smoke than usual, either. Guess you'll have to make ambrosia salad with those marshmallows. Last edited by Goslingbiz; 01-09-2012 at 01:09 PM. |

OH, For carving patterns, that's entirely different and makes great stop cuts depending how deep you burn. I thought you wanted to trace and burn the outlined picture. We'll look forward to seeing the finished product. |
