I was wondering if anyone on here could turn me a small dowel? I don't have a lathe, I'm tempted to buy a mini lathe but would hate to for this tiny project (But I'm REALLY tempted...can't have too many power tools... ) I would supply the wood. And send something extra for your carving pleasure for your trouble, Or I can pay you... I have some small exotic pieces and a few pieces of basswood I can use to trade (If interested I will give you a detailed list of what I have then you can pick what you would like!) Okay what I need is this: a 4" or 5" length X 3/16th inch dowel.in Gabon Ebony. This is for a project I want to finish here in about 7 to 10 day time frame. If you are interested or know of a source that I can buy from I would be extremely grateful! Thanks for looking! |

You might get somebody local to do it. A quick Google search turns up Mark Supik & Co. Woodturning and Beer Tap Handles in Baltimore (1 North Haven Street, Baltimore - (410) 732-8414) and Big Pole Woodturning (419 Griffin Court, Baltimore - (410) 276-7653). There's also Montgomery County Woodturners (MCW) And Mid-Maryland woodturners Mid Maryland Wood Turning Club. I don't know how close those two are to you.

You could buy the size rod you need in walnut and ebonize it using white vinagar with a few rusty nails thrown in let the rod soak all night and it will turn black. Larry |

I just learnt of a method for ebonising as well, soak a wad of steel wool in vinegar for a week then strain through muslin or other, for further darkening, strained, strong black tea over it will help activate the natural tannin in the wood making it quite dark.

I never heard of "Ebonising" wood! I 'll have to experiment with that. Thank you Magicman and Josef. jmischel, That's usually the first thing I do is jump to Google. However, I thought the lure of a trade of some exotic wood might entice someone from here will try Google though if the experiment doesn't give me the result I need...Thank you!
