Winter tree carving

If weather permits, is it better to carve woodspirits in trees in the winter when sap is not flowing? Or, does that have any effect on it one way or another? Does season of the year have anything at all to do with the desirability of carving on a tree?

There is less chance of infection getting in in the winter but as soon as the warmer weather comes around the bugs will be able to get in. Certainly the sap doesnt run in the winter but it is impossible to seal the tree because the sealer wont dry just freeze or stay sticky. I would recommend carving in the summer it is much more comfortable and your fingers dont freeze. This way you can seal the tree as soon as its done. Make sure that you dont cut the bark all the way around the tree as to interupt the sap flow and dont go too deep with your woodspirit. Think of it as if it were yourself if you cut yourself and it isnt too deep you can put a bandaid on it and it will heal. If you cut yourself deep it will require stitches and a greater chance of infection. Also make sure it is a mature tree.Hope this has helped

Wow you are carving into a live tree.
What kind of sealer is best?
I have used plain old spray paint when pruning.
I would think linseed oil would not freeze.
