Default Windchimes and Whistles?

Hello!! wow! first time on the wood carving board! yaye!

Well here I am trying to figure out two kinds of carving:
Numbero Uno: Is there any way to carve out thick sticks to make windchimes? What kind of tools are involved? Â*??? Â*mind..these tools would need to be simple. I'm 16 and just started.

Numbero dos: Whistles. Carving out wood to make into flutes/whistles. I have no clue how to do this. But i think it might be similar to the windchimes. help?

thanks!

Linz

I hope I am not giving away anyones trade secrets, but this may help? Looking at some hand made flutes, I noticed some folks start out with a round piece of wood and split it down the center. Then they hollow out the two halves and glue them back together. This must be the cheapest way to go, as all you need is a gouge and a way to split the dowel.

Hmm that sounds really good! thanks!

But will glueing it really work well for a flute?? Other than glue, waht might be another remedy for putting it back together?

Native American flutes were wrapped with rawhide, which is really hard to find now days. Go for the wood glue. As far as windchimes go, most of the wood you can carve is soft and makes almost no discernable noise when smacked together. You would need a very hard wood to get any appreciable sound unless you want to use bamboo. Maybe thin slices of petrified wood could be used....

For small pieces of rawhide you can soak a large dog chew until the rawhide is pliable and cut what you need. It works good, and when it dries out it shrinks so it will tighten down.
