Default Willow Spoon Finished

I showed a picture the other day of this spoon roughed out. Man, I'm surprised how nicely it finished. The slab in the back ground id one of three I had cut at the mill the other day. This is all that remains of a small willow that the beaver took off with last year, Notice the knot in the handle (I think it adds character to the spoon. Finished as usual with mineral oil and apperently food safe. It measures 10 inches over all.

That's a beautiful spoon, Cliff! You're right about the knot. I just got a nice piece of poplar with some good color in it. You've inspired me to try an eating spoon. We'll see what I can do with it.

Bob, thanks, I've never used willow before but this piece is special in that it's all I've got left of a beautiful litte tree that just sprung up between the rocks and grew so big in just three years, Damn those beavers.I'm really surprised at the polish it took after just sanding with a 320 mop sander.

Thumbs up Re: Willow Spoon Finished

Wow! I've never used willow for carving although I have made some nice rustic furniture from it in the past... the limbs bend really good without steaming too. I can't believe that glistening finish from only mineral oil, but that is what I use when it requires a food safe finish. I suppose the worst that could happen is just an extra trip to the outhouse and I suppose that is good since "movement" is everything at my age. (HA!) That slab you had cut is also really nice with some impressive swirling effects. Not only do you have a good "eye" for catching a pretty wife but it appears that talent has bled over to finding good wood for carving. Thanks for sharing this!

Amazing Cliff I have carved the native willow here a number of times and your little tree is way more beautiful then the stuff around here. I like the tan swirly grain and man you did a good job carving it, symmetrical, clean the bowl thickness look all even it is a great spoon

Cliff, that is a mighty nice spoon you carved there. Beautiful wood and finish and I like the knot too.

Hi Cliff,

I'm very impressed with yourspoons, this one, too. It looks like you've managed to get it really uniform around the edge of the bowl. Very nice.
