Default Wichita Carving Show

Saturday and had the Honor and pleasure to meet Ron Davidson, and of course Lou, for the first time. Been planning on it for 4 years now. One terrific fellow and the pictures of his relief carving does not do them justice, no way, no shape or form. I renewed xsailer friendship as I had not seen him or his wife since 2006. The time was way to short there but had to move on to viewing the rest of the show. Xsailer and Ron had an excellent table set up and I don't know how they did in their judged cats as we left just as they were taking their pieces up for judgeing. Met several Professional carvers there and was able to talk with them. Gearld and Barhara Sears, Stu and Donna Martin were there and talked with them a little and carried home one of Gerald's Helvie knives to add to the knife collection. Notice xzailer got one also.
Lynn and Judy Doughty was there also and is always nice to talk with them.
Ol Don Burgdorf was there but did not get to talk with him much. Nedra Denison was there and had a nice chat with her. Well the little bride and her did most of the talk. Nice set of vendor as well as Heineke wood. Brought several pieces of his basswood home.
Jame Hooper from Edmond Ok was there, another carver friend I met at the 2006 Bishop class and James had already recieved two seconds and was beat out by Gearld Sears for first so he was happy.
Tallked with Trudy Rossitter( not her name now) for a while and told her I missed her tables and was disappointed in Moors not being there.
Desiree Hajnay was there and always a pleasure to look at her carve animals.
One other gentleman I met there and please forgive me sir, I can't remember his name for the life of me. Guess the old age factor but do home he PMs or emails me.

Real nice show and will be attending next year. Very easy to get to for us and a pleasure outing.
All in all, we had a great time and my back pocket was a lot lighter when we left. Hey, the little bride bought just as much as I did and if push came to shove, maybe more. But thank you darlin for the Gearld Sears Signature Helvie knife for my collection.

Glad to hear the show was a success. I was tied up with other commitments and couldn't make it. Some of our Great Bend carvers were there and I'll be looking forward to a report from them.

We had a great show I think. Great to finally meet Kenny and Lynn. Also met allot of people that are lurkers on the forum or that read the WCI articles. I didn't win any ribbons Xsailor had all the luck at our table and I think I heard that Lynn won first or something I will let him say for sure. I also had to pick up a new knife or two I bought 2 Helvies and a couple of Dennys that I have been looking for. Got some nice basswood as a door prize. I also got to visit with the judge about what he felt was wrong with with my entry so I know where I need to improve I didn't agree with all he said and I don't think Xsailor did either. It was the comment that my entry didn't have a frame around it ( never heard that rule) anyway he had some good feedback. Thanks Kenny and Lynn for comming up.
Ron

Like Kenny I too forgot my camera in the rush out of the house Saturday morning at 0400 to get on the road to the show. Guess you all are just going to have to wait for the Chip Chats show report. Sorry!

As Ron mentioned, I was fortunate enough to win a few awards. "Joshua Deets" took a first, as did " End to a Bad Year!, "A 's Pony", and "Trouble on the River!". "Trouble on the River" also won the Caricature Merit award and the "Best of Show" trophy. "War Bonnet" took a second in the Miscellaneous group as there was no category for Busts in Caricature.

Like most shows, the Wichita show was experiencing some difficulty in filling up the available booth space and attracting the outside crowds. I'm happy to say that this year was completely different, the new Cessna location was filled completely with booths of really high-quality carvers and the attendance was way up from what it was years before. Hopefully, the other shows around the country are experiencing this same turn of events.

Lynn, I was wondering what you put in for Great showing for you and congrats. Sorry I did not take more time and chat with you. Joshua Deets was definitely a winner even before I saw it in person. Even though your pictures of it were great and your blog also, seeing it in person, pictures doesn't do it justice either. One fantastic piece. Can't wait to see what you come up with next,

Bob, what did you have judge? Bob, your counter slide out gave us a great idea and thank you for showing it.Won't be the same but another idea to explore.
Ron, tell us a little of what the judge said about yours. Again, after seeing Ron's piece in person, picture don't do them justice either.

Kenny,
I submitted in different classes but was very proud and surprised to win a very nice looking blue ribbion for the mystical Gryphon of Mr. Cipa's design. I have several pics of some of the winners and if I can get the computer figured out I plan of posting them if somebody else hasn't already. My opinion of our show in Wichita this year is high on my list of previously visited shows. As Lynn said several very good and other well known carvers were in attendance. Randy Landen, CCA member, is our Great Plains Wood Carvers club show chairman. His prestige and I'm sure invitations to note worthy carvers and others resulted in a notable show this weekend. I sure enjoyed seeing all of the contributors and a few of WCI Forum members. Also was fun laughing and scratching with Ron Davidson for two days.

Hi Kenny and Tom S.

This was my first show to get to, and I really enjoyed it. It was a pleasure to meet many of the people from this forum and talk to several carvers and see their stuff up close. I plan on trying to make more (although I will make sure not to wear my uniform again...answered a lot of questions ...was fun though). I really learn some good things from Randy's demonstrations on faces and got some great ideas for my next attempt at carving. Thanks to all those I visited with and the opportunity to share, I will definitely be to as many more shows as I can make. I did pick up the flyers for the carving workshop in Branson in June and Oct, might try one of those also. Thanks again it was great.

Ken
