I occurred to me that there are a few real advantages of "whittling small". First you just need a good pocket knife. A V-tool can be useful tho. Not much cost for wood. Not much of a mess to clean up. Not much work space needed. Can whittle just about any where. Here's my work bench. It's a lap bench, and as you can see has quite a few projects on it...... Tom H |

I agree Tom. I've been picking up a log here and there and now I've amassed a stockpile. Do you know how many Whittlebears I can get out of a log? I don't either but I'm going to have fun finding out!! I love doing the Whittlebears and of course, small pins for Michelle. Like you've mentioned in previous posts, I get so many and I just end up giving them away. Once in a while I'll sell a bear. It'd be nice if I could sell more Whittlebears but I think it's more fun to just give them away. I guess we're on the same wavelength because I just posted a tip about whittling small projects and keeping them in your pocket. Tip for pocketing small whittling projects Bob L

Another advantage is you don't need a whole wall to display your collection of carvings. My wife doesn't like big stuff, too much to dust she says.

I have to admit I was pretty impressed by your "small footprint" when I saw you at Evart. ![]() Some neat carvings on your little bench. I like the looks of that carving clamp too. Did you make it or is it commercially available?

Thanks for asking Terry. It's home made. Here's another example, with a wing nut. The threaded bolt needs a allen wrench to tighten. The secret to getting the piece real tight is the foam pieces. Tom H Last edited by Tom-H; 07-21-2011 at 10:32 AM. |

I like it. I may have to steal your idea. Looks pretty handy.

I admire you guys that can carve small. My big paws get in the way with anything less than 3" plus my eyes ain't what they use to be!
