Whittling and Woodcarving by E.J. Tangerman is good book with tons of info and projects like chains, puzzles, ball-in-cage, and many others.

I have The Little Book of Whittling, by the same author of Whittling Twigs and Branches. I like the book a lot. A lot of the material is the same between them. I'd recommend either.

one I liked was carving basswood eggs by Mary Finn and my reason was that she has you make a practice stick for eyes another for the nose and two for the mouths one open one closed.
