Default "Where's my head?" carving

I was searching for something to do with this 1 1/2" square piece of wood and finally made a support for a carved bottle stopper.

I just applied some shellac on it right now, and am not decided on the final finish. I also only drilled a 1/4" hole for now until I'm really sure on its use.

It is the body of an artist wearing a scarf around the neck. I think it would make a nice support for a Pete Leclair style head.

I am wondering if I should use color... or not. The usual question... to paint, or not...

The last picture is to show the size compared to a normal figure.

Any comments welcome

Gilles

Hi Gilles, I think the finish that you have on it right now is fine. Merle

Me too. I like it just the way it is, but if you do deside to use paint, water it down a lot. just a hit of color would do. Evie

I'm with Minowevie.....you did a nice job on this...and the finish is fine the way it is. A real light wash is the only color I'd add....and that's a maybe. Bonnie

Thanks for being so positive about the finish.

I decided to try something different for this one and used shellac first so that the wood would not be colored as much with the next finish I would apply. But I like it like that also, even if I was wondering if I should add color...

Now the choice is clear

Gilles

The name has changed to "Anonymous Personalitus" since the addition of a blank head.

I drilled and install a dowel into a blank head to help figure out the look it will have. I glued the dowel only into the head to be able to remove it and use another haed if I want to.

The next step will be to sketch the head details on it before I carve anything.

I may not be a piece of art... but it is a fun thing to carve. I originally carved the body to be used as a support for some heads.

Oh, and you can see the color that 3 coats of shellac added to the wood. That is also what I intented to learn from. Some say that shellac is the nicest finish for wood because it add a warm tint to the wood.

I must add that I put a 3rd coat of shellac since the first pictures. At worst, I can use alcohol to take some of the shellac off if I don't like the look with 3 coats..

Thanks for following.
