Yet another thing I can't do---- Chainsaw carving. I have done four pieces, sold one (it was actually commisioned, and finished with chisels anyway). So anyone else ever found it wasn't that easy to pick up and do? I figured if I can carve well, than I can carve large well. It was a lot of fun and I still will do commisioned pieces but it's a different animal than doing a crucifix in the cool confines of my basement! I don't know why I try all this crazy stuff when I do my own thing pretty well, any body give me an amen on that? well if you need me Ill be in the basement.

Amen, I tryed a chain saw carving several years ago. (Life size Uncle Sam) Out of red oak. Just getting the 7ft. X 3ft. Dia. log settup on end was a job in it self. I carved the top hat, head and shoulders, a little down the front of his jacket and gave up. To much noise, vibration, etc. But don't give up trying new things, its ok to get out of your basement every now and then. Uncle Sam now sits on my property corner at the edge of the cornfield behind my house. I'm sure the farmers love it when they plow the field! |

My wife wants me to stick with one or two types of carving but I too have always wondered about the ole chain saw carvings. I see them and want to learn but I think you have to have several chain saws of different lengths?? I also hear it is quite dangerous. What were your experiences?

I just did my first chainsaw carving and I really don't know what the big deal is...had no problems. Ok, so carving all those little chain links took a long time but it looks just like a real chainsaw!

I have done some chainsaw carving recently. It is hard work indeed! But just think of it as roughing out a carving. Taking small amounts at a time. Walk around the carving, and look at all sides. If I could figure out how to post a pic, I'd share a few with you. |

8)Chainsaw carving doesn't mean you have to use a gas motor. Electric chain saws or angle grinders with a saw blade are lighter, safer, more control, and my neighbors still tollerate me.
