Default Weird piece of wood

Hello

I have something that might interest you. I found this oddly grown branch or root at Shivwits which is south of the Gunlock Reservoir in Washington County, Utah.
I'm trying to identify the strange growth formation, so I asked over at ubcbotanicalgarden.org. Here's the thread:

Weird piece of wood - UBC Botanical Garden Forums

If you don't trust that link, then here's my post there:

"What I have here, is a strange branch that I found while gathering firewood for a campfire. It was found among a large fallen branch that seemed to be the source as it was the same type and age.

As you can see from the pics, it has a circular growth with no beginning or end. Just kind of grew in a loop (9X11). Could this be from some kind of natural grafting? Anyone know what this type of growth is?"
I'm thinking one of you skilled wood carvers might have seen this before, as most of you like to find (while on hikes, etc.) good/cool pieces of wood for carving.

Thanks

That certainly is an interesting piece of wood. Well worth holding on to. I couldn't tell you anything beyond what you have been told on the botany forum. I like the "mobius root" comment.
