This is a shelf from the haunch of a tree that I made for one of my carved bonsai. The section had just the right amount of curvature to capture the swirling pattern of the bark. I thought some of you might like the idea for your displays. The bonsai was carved from a hollow piece of driftwood, and there are so many wormholes in it that it was like carving a chunk of swiss cheese. Three branches shattered during construction as a result of too much pressure on the cutting bit. Last edited by foundwood; 07-27-2006 at 02:00 PM. |

Yes, the mask is wood, and I believe it is yellow pine. It was a piece of driftwood that had dried out above the tide line on the banks of the Cape Fear River. I saw the ear that was formed from a knothole. I applied four different colors of paint, and then a clear coat. I promise it doesn't look as scary or harsh in reality. The photos make it appear rougher in finish, as well. Here are a couple of close-up views of it: ![]() ![]() Last edited by foundwood; 07-29-2006 at 09:22 AM. |

Beautiful work on both pieces. Isn't it amaizing what we can find in an ordinary piece of wood and release? Great job. Bob
