Worked on ornaments for the exchange... I have 5 carved and accented but still have final prep and finish to do on them. I think I will be waiting until I have about 8 (half the list) done before I ship out... I also managed to drop my 5/16" gouge and like buttered toast... it landed edge side down on my garage floor. I was at the workbench, grabbed it and fumbled it... I tried to strop it out but it was such a bad nick that I had to go over to Russ's today to get him to fix it. Now I know how to make Gouge Chip Carving gouges have the correct edge, but have no tools to do it with. I wish the woodworking elves would stock my garage while I slept with the following m: Compound mitre saw Table saw Drill press Wood lathe Any other hand or power tool I don't have which is too many to list. Well, I rambled enough and hope you all had a good weekend carving or not!! Sean PS - And a subscription to WCI!!! |

Did exactly the same thing two weeks ago, we were having our first time ever (may consider doing it again in another fifty-seven years!) garage sale! The second day had a lull so I thought, hmmmm, cup of tea and carving time. No more than got started and dropped my favorite gouge, which fell straight down, of course! Cement does do a number on the edge, doesn't it?!Head Bange Oh well, I made enough at the sale to pick up a few things I needed from MDI and replace the gouge. Soon I'll have enough tools to send off to Rick Ferry to get sharpened! If the elves stop by, send them on to my house, I have a whole lot of wants and needs on my list!! Talking Deborah |

Please send the elves over to build my garage--I can maybe get the fairies or santa to stock it later. )

Sean, You are just like everyone else. Drop a gouge and do your damnedest to catch it. WRONG THING TO DO!!!!! Just let it fall. You can sharpen it regardless if it hits on the working end but you may be doing it with bandages if you try to catch it. Hard to do but let it fall. Sometimes it'll actually hit on the handle end. lesson learned never thought i'd be telling this on myself but i dropped a favorite roughing knife this spring, setting on the patio brick surface missed catching it. but kicked at it like a dummy to soften the blow, but i never heard it hit the bricks.. upon investigation found it sticking in my ankle, didn't hurt cuz it being so sharp and diabetic nerve damage, but i wont try to save another, i bought 3 rubber mats to set under my chairs on the patio porches, and they work

Didn't get much done over the week-end, carving wise. Tinkered away at carving the pot on the dragon scene, but that was about it. Bob

Okay all... I think some of you misread the post... I tried to stRop it not Stop it... LOL Although ones instinct is to catch a falling object, I learned myself quickly not to try it with my carving stuff!! Sean |

Might want to keep a sharp eye on that injury! both from the diabetic side and the fact , some wood has something in it that causes an infection...ask Alfie!

This last weekend was a busy one. I've been under the house putting new insulation up. (major water leak this summer). Heat taping all the water lines, wrapping insulation around sewer lines. And then I have a garden I'm pulling down and canning up. Gotta have salsa. LOL I did get more santas carved up last week so I did some painting on them in the evenings. I think it takes longer to paint than to carve. whew. Oh ya..and a Pampered Chef party. Funny how my priorities went from fun kitchen gadgets to carving tools.....LOL |
