| | What we make I know everyone here is creative because we all carve. What I'm wondering is what else do carvers make to support their addiction? I recently made a carving stand, went to a salvage yard purchased a round flat steel plate for the base and 2 lengths of pipe for the post to hold the carving. Whole thing including paint, nuts and bolts cost me $25. My wife also made me several tool rolls for my carving tools. What about it guys and gals, anyone make their own knifes or other stuff? I think it's great and also satisfying, not only that I save some money to buy new carving tools. have fun, carve oldbearx2 |

| | | Re: What we make You bet-In answer to your initial question, 'what other items do we make'? I often find the need for another project, either out of necessity, (as in the case of a carvers pallet, work bench or grandchilds toy) or, often I just need a break from the carving that I'm working on. I've made all of my own furniture, shop, garage, most of my own carving tools, built 5 homes. Check out 'other wood items' on my carving site. |

| | Re: What we make While I can't take credit for this, you might be interested in this one. A friend of mine delivered to me on Friday, a carving .......bench......I guess you'd call it.
Ken is a tinkerer, was a machinest all his life and works in wood a lot too, very gifted with his hands, and we are good friends. He was concerned with my carving arrangements at home , (because of my accident injuries) and designed and built a complete carving bench or more like a station.
It is metal framed, 3' steel pipe, hosts a well padded seat that swivels out so I can mount comfortably,( seat is from a lawn tractor), has adjustable swinging arm rests to offer support (one with a cup holder built in), a center post with a rotatable carving surface on top, adjustable height, foot rests adjusted to my length, a second post much higher, to hook my Foredom to, that also includes a circular adjustable shelf to hold burrs, hand pieces and other tools.
This man's a genius! He is also a good, kind and considerate friend! I'll try to take a pic and post it .....somewhere? I'll have to do some painting on the steel work, to tidy it up, but it is a wonderful bench and will be perfect for the intended purpose, power carving!

| | Re: What we make I was thinking of something like this to solve a problem on a much smaller scale. I need help completing my rough-outs on the bandsaw. Before i'm finished, I don't have a flat enough surface to complete all the cuts. Any suggestions?

| | | Re: What we make Cut Fingers...
This is a little off the thread subject, but....
Some carvers will glue a small piece of what is cut off back in place to saw out the 'other side'. A touch of Elmers is the most common that I know of.
I ususally just leave a tab on each end - at the top and bottom, or close to it - to keep the piece square so that it does not wobble when cutting the other profile. Sometimes I will not cut pieces of the one side completely off - just backing the blade out. I will just break it off after cutting the other side. The tabs, I just carve off. It takes a little longer, but is not really a problem.
I think gluing is the safest. DO NOT try to hold the piece level with your hand. |

| | | Re: What we make I've used double stick tape (the kind used for regripping golf clubs) for years. Works fine. Do a search for Golfsmith or Gofworks, either have it. | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
