Thumbs up WCI- Spring '06 issue

Just a quick thanks to all of the author's and staff for another fine issue of WCI!!

Great job to Bob S. who is one of this board's most prolific and helpful poster's and only wish that I had time to do the same. Wow! A detailed eight page spread on carving a ship model which gives me a much better understanding of such an intricate branch in carving.

Some of my favorite articles this time because they were particularly helpful to me were:
  • Catch and Release? (page 41) This article has given me some great ideas for finishing the mini basswood bears that I mount on the top of some of my walking sticks. Just comparing these pictures to my carvings gives me a good reference for improvements.
  • Realistic Eagle Bust Cane Topper (page 64) I'm always looking for more walking stick ideas and this is a good one. I did my first bald eagle topper about two years ago and it's pretty darn good, if I don't mind saying so myself but I get so many new insights from another fine work for which this is no exception!
  • The Rooster Relief Carving (page 20) This is another absolutely beautiful and most unique relief design from Susan Irish. Very creative instructions and drawings to follow for one of the most colorful projects in this issue... and I am only rarely drawn to relief carving! Thanks Susan!
  • Contemporary Carved Hearts (page 44) As a woodshop teacher I'm always looking for some quick, fun, and appealing projects and this one fits that bill!
  • Foredom Series SR- product review (page 14) Always nice to learn more about new developments.
Well, those were some of my favorites for this issue but now I've gotta get busy looking for that darn "frickin" little fox again now!!

I ditto all that was said above! I've got the Eagle pattern on a block of wood ready to be cut out tomorrow. And the rooster pattern is on wood ready for me to start on that too.

I was totally amazed by reading on how Bob does those ships.. wow. My hubby asked if I could do one in the LUND style.. *grinning* I told him no way.. I cant see that well.

And that fox? Well... he aint in this issue either.. looked five times.. hubby looked once. And when they shown where he was hiding last time.. there he was in plain sight. I coulda swore he wasnt in MY magazine. LOL

And when hubby was looking...he stopped at that page where you start your carving on fire... told me that am I NOT to attempt that one. At least not until I can sit out in the middle of the yard somewhere... guess that project has to wait. It was fun to read about tho..

Yes.. it was a good magazine again.

Aw geez you's guys.....you're going to give me a swelled head. Thank you for your kind words and encouragement. BobD, Jon and Shannon at WCI deserve the credit, they made a beautiful job with the mess of stuff I sent them.

Haven't seen the whole magazine yet....darn mules are slow this winter.

Bob

Congratulations on a good article Bob. I'm still amazed at the small details you're able to produce on your ships. I tried a really small carving the other day and the first thing I did was cut my finger. So much for that project. Again great article, from a super and talented craftsman. Well done!!!

The sheer detail, concentration, and focus that those ships require amaze me too... and I thought that I was really something when I finished my first Boy Scout wood carved canoe!! Still got a long way to go.

Yeah, that fire article was for sure something new and different to me. I think we'd all better study up on that one real good before trying it!!

What they all said already....ditto! Every edition is great, but I think this was TOTALLY GREAT, front to back. Can't wait to try some of them, and isn't that the ultimate test of a "how to" article--to make carvers want to try it? ANd likewise, Bob (squbrigg) your work was just awesome. The detail you put into one of your carvings is just amazing.

WCI is the best!! And so are the fantastic messenger board members who are so talented and are willing to share their talents with us.
