| | A Warning To Others I'm working on an article and was looking through the pictures we took along the way of the project to try to get inspired to actually start writing it up.
When I saw this one, I realized that my real purpose in life just might be to simply serve as a warning to others.
Wear gloves

| | Re: A Warning To Others Teri,
Too much and too true! The first book I ever got from the library was full of pictures of hands wearing bandaids. I had two odd thoughts flipping through the pages ... One, the bandaids seemed to migrate mysteriously from finger to finger depending on the page that you were viewing ... and ... did I really want to continue in this hobby???
So I would like to add to your "Wear Gloves"; use a bracing board, dog leg clamps, or a solid backed work bench whenever possible.

| | Re: A Warning To Others Safety First should always be the first rule of carving but it's amazing how many (including me from time to time) who even refuse to wear a carving glove. Yeah, they're clumbsy at first but like most things, from eating a healthy diet to wearing a seat belt while driving humans can adjust to almost anything if they care enough. But unfortunately 40,000 to 50,000/year will continue to die on U.S. highways each year and a lot of folks will continue to accept the pain of scars and stitches from carving.
After many years and many stitches I now understand what Mark Twain meant when he once said that, "Too much education can be a dangerous thing." Perhaps in the case of carving, too much confidence can be a dangerous thing!
In addition to Irishs' list I also enjoy using a bench hook while carving... especially nice when doing a flat relief carving. |

| | Re: A Warning To Others LOL - Rick, I deleted the picture because you said it was gross!!! Why are you deleting your posts and replacing them with others?? Makes it hard to follow the thread, silly one (even if this thread is too silly to follow anyway).

| | Re: A Warning To Others You guys bring up a lot of good reminders about safety that everyone could use. Thanks for THAT.
I'm the worst when it comes to that, but still glad to be of service :-)

| | Re: A Warning To Others YOU KNOW, carving gloves do help,IF you wear them. I say this typing one handedly as I preach a good sermon but don't practice what I preach. My problem is, I take the glove off and see where I can clean up a cut and BAM! Dang old knife done up and cut me. You would think after 3 times, This old gezzer would learn. My son sowed my finger up last night and said I was his best customer. Anyways Teri, I understand what you are saying and maybe now I will keep the glove on and make my last move, taking off the glove.
Best to you and hang in there. |

Teri | Whew! Sure glad that I logged in yesterday and didn't miss the picture!!
Eventhough I thought that it was in good taste for this forum, perhaps we sometimes need a good dose of shock therapy, scared straight, or just pure gross to bring us back to reality! | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
