Default War Eagle Seminar

A couple of others have mentioned that a new seminar is being organized here in NW Arkansas. I had heard about this seminar and had trouble finding information on it; so I am posting the basics here.

Yesterday I drove over to the Hide Away Campground www.beaverlakehideaway.com and made my camping reservation for the September 13-17 dates of the War Eagle Seminar. The owners of the campground were friendly and very helpful. They gave me a handout of the instructors and an application for the classes. If you are interested email me pdguraedy@yahoo.com and I will send you a copy.

Although there was a War Eagle Seminar until a couple of years ago; this one is located on Beaver Lake instead of War Eagle Creek and Steve Brown www.stevebrownwoodcarving.com is managing it.

Instructors (13) include Wayne Shinlever and Steve Brown. Classes include caricature, chip carving, relief, bird carving, animal, portrait, pyrography and beginner. There will, of course, be a sharpener and supplies purveyor.

The seminar costs $175 and most of the instructor's supply costs were under $60. Not bad in today's world.

Paul, thanks for the post on this and passing the word.
We have been blessed here in Northwest Arkansas, over the years, with excellent teachers at various meets in Branson and at War Eagle in the past. The War Eagle seminar had always been a special two week experience with great carvers from all over the states to visit with, not to mention the high level of teachers. It was so sad over the final few years to see it slowly close. Another point is the ever dwendling of teachers available to pass on some of the skills to the younger generation like those at Branson and War Eagle. With loosing the old War Eagle and now Silver Dollar, it is a breath of fresh air to see the New War Eagle Seminars getting up and going. Hopefull this is the start of reviving interest in carving skills and an ecconomical seminar to go to. I can remember with delight the old War Eagle Seminars and the very high lever of teachers that were so helpfull and interested in helping you get a project finished. And the visiting with other carvers was worth the attending just for the bull scessions.

If you can take the classes, do it. I've carved with Wayne Shinlever 2 times and he's one of the nicest guys you'll meet. (a retired lawman) He's also a great teacher and carver. fred k

Sure glad to see someone is getting the War Eagle Seminars going again. I went for 10 years in a row and really enjoyed the wonderful teachers and meeting so many nice people. I always camped down by the creek in my little tent and most others had nice motorhomes or such, but it was great and I learned so much. I'm going to see if I can do this Sept. thing. (it was always in June before and it was easier for me to get away then).

Thanks Paul for the update. Do you know who is leading the bird session? Just curious--don't know if I can get away for two carving doin's in September but it sure sound tempting.

You surviving the rain? We've had some flooding--about 10" rain this week and there's water water everywhere!

We had a scrap sale again this week. You know the little 3M radial discs? I got some that are 2" that should be good for cleaning up large carvings...will save you some.

Hello everyone, I am doing a American Kestrel, life size, with a Luna Moth added. The roughout will be sized and smoothed down to make it ready to start serious layout without much waste wood. The class is power and woodburning of feathers and stoneing. I am working on a notebook with layout and patterns of about 20 pages to help you if you decide to do one later. Will paint with acrylics. Need to bring power tools and woodburners. I will furnish paint and other materials.
If anyone wants a brochure I will email you one. I need your email adress because it is too large to place here. Or you can call me at 479-756-6302 or email at carverwolfe@sbcglobal.net I can also email you my brochure.
I plan on some special projects, like doing the Moth and also cutting out a base and painting it to look like stone. I would add an image of project but cannot figure out how to get the ULR address to post.
There will be something going on almost every night with pot luck and inertainment. Kinda like the Old War Eagle.
I agree the June time table would be great. Not sure why it is moved to September, maybe the campground is full during the summer. Have had some great times at War Eagle Creek, maybe something could be worked out with the owners to get back in there later, by renting the property for a week or two.
They have 13 instructors and I am sure a great time can be had by all.
See you there!

Hi Donna, I am surviving the rain...........not too sure about the garden though. We managed to get it planted during the brief dry spell and plants were just coming up when the new "wet season" started. Did have one streak of luck. I wanted to plant some "lady peas" (a small, hard-to-shell, cream pea) and all of the suppliers said they were sold out for 2010.

Diana said, "Why don't you use that seed you saved?"

"What seed?", I asked.

"The package you put in the deep freeze."

Well Donna, the reason I did not remember it is that I collected the seed from a garden I did in 1998. I planted 15 seeds, in Diana's flower bed, as a test...and all 15 sprouted. As the old saying goes.......Now and then even a blind hog gets lucky!

The rain is coming in downpours and has just about wiped out our driveway. I will have to get some more gravel........but when? Don't want to put it on there and then watch it wash away too!

The dates on War Eagle are inconvenient (with there being only a week between it and the Wildlife in Wood seminar); but, Steve DiGiacomo and I are planning on going. Steve thinks he will continue with bark carving and I think I will take Patty Drucker's pyrography class.
