I just screw a cup hook or screw eye into the bottom of the cane and hang it on a string from the ceiling of my shop.. works good for me!

During the process of applying the final coats of finish I always run the end of a coathanger through the small hole that I drill for the leather wrist band and hang it up to dry. You can form some fancy bends in the hanger so that it can't slip or slide against the finish. Works for me.

I use a couple of fish hooks that I have rigged up in the garage the trebble hooks make sure they are sharp it will catch great and when the varnish is dry you can just touch up the marks a little, mind you they are hardly visable anyway.
