Default Walking staff/stick

Here is the top of a walking stick I started. It is mountain laurel(rhodendron) and stands 68'' tall.I have not shaved down the rest of the stick because I wanted some input on some designs from the head down.Hopefully it looks ok to everyone because I am still struggling on backrounds.I am just not set up for good photoprophy just yet. Please don't hold back on your opinions.Thanx, Davy

MA, burning and carving is not the same as playing with matches and knives.

The background looks good Davy, the carving showed up ok! I would add more carvings down the staff{if I was going to keep the staff} or the deer prints you spoke about on it. Will you add your personal finger cruves on it also? Put your hand on it where you will be when you are using the staff, draw lines around your hand and in between your fingers as they are wrapped around the stick, its kinda hard but just mark off the best you can your fingers on the staff. Then carve them out to fix your hand when you use it walking. Hope to show you the big Indian hickory walking staft I carved a few years back. I will be ckn with you my carving friend~ Forrest TnArtsit
P.S the carving looks GOOD!

Great looking stick! Rododendron and Moutain laurel are two different species; both extremely hard wood. I give you lots of credit for attempting to carve those species. I envy your talent.

I thank you folks for your kind comments. The local folks around call rhodendren mountain laurel.I did not know they were two different species. Thanks for pointing that out bbeery. It is easier to carve when wet and seal it quickly to prevent splitting.
