Yep I thought the same thing about the one looking like a British solider, somewhere around the Victorian period, but it wasn't intentional. The first face is the happy face for Hi-ho.
I am very pleased with the changes which occured when carving this staff, the faces really became quite unique as I progressed.
Just finished putting the stain on, so should get the first topcoat on today as well.
The wood is poplar, and the finish stain is chestnut. Then a rubber cane protector will be added to the base. The first staff I did , split on the end when I hit a rock , so now I add the cane base to all of the staffs. For a small cost really improved the support gained from the staff.

| | Re: Walking Staff Ash, I wish we could see the other faces. I appreciate how long that had to take in spite of how fast you are getting at them.
I have carved four more staffs now that I have gotten the hang of them, but I keep giving them away before I take pictures of them. One had a peacock on it, another had a serpent and a yin yang in the shape of base clefs (sp), and a face as well, the other two had a face and a flower. I have two more staffs stripped down and ready to carve.
Where did you get the rubber cane protector? I haven't gotten that far.
I also finished building my bear carving into a box, and put it out on display and sold it in about 3 hours! That was fun. I posted it's picture and another piece in my picture gallery. The other new one is a shelf with tudor roses on it with a little dowel rod under it to hang towels. I'm making my box "bigger" instead of thinking outside of it. My son suggested doing that.
