| | Walking Canes from the sky? I had a olde friend from Ky and me and him would walk in the woods looking for saplings to carve canes from.It was kinda a contest who could find a nice knotted stick or a good one for a cane. While walking along we both wasnt seeing any nice saplings{least I wasnt} I stopped and told him, theres not any around here. OHhhhhhhhh yes theres a nice one he replied!
Where?? I asked,he said, "son right above your head"! I look up and still couldnt see what he was talking about for a walkn cane?? There as he ponted out a branch with a nice handle already formed in it! We both pulled the larger branch down as I cut off this smaller branch with the handle and stick all in one! This walkn cane is made of hickory also and I carved a rams head in it plus cut groves all the way down the cane. The groves went along with the horns of the rams.
Course this cane also will remain with me,I use it at times,it reminds me of a good friend Mr. O' Rear was and how much he knew about wood,he loved finding diamond willows in Arkansas.
Thanks for allowing me to share about this walkn cane found in the sky.

| | Re: Walking Canes from the sky? Thank's for sharing your memories with us..What a nice story. It goes to show the Good Lord can give us many many things for us to enjoy from the world of nature. When Curtis and I were young and just starting out in our craft adventure we found things in nature to go along with our craft.. Isn't the Lord good? Your carving is one to treasure for sure..Charlotte |

| | Re: Walking Canes from the sky? Thank you Thor. Mr. Jewel O'Rear came to my home once a day and sometimes twice a day. He'd watch me paint,he wasnt well educated but had such a vast knowledge about so many things.I got sick in 97' and on the 6th of Sept that year one day after my birthday he died.At his furneral his wife told me, to come over to their house that evening.Walking into their home, she told me, You can have anything Jewel had,a gun, knives his moblie home in the back yard, tools in his shop, she said, you name what you want Forrest.
I walked down to his bed room and in a corner was a diamond willow cane he had made. I told Mrs O'Rear I would love to have this cane. I have this cane of his in my gun case.

| | Re: Walking Canes from the sky? I love sticks with a natural handle, they are extremely strong too! I have two basswood sticks like that one for my wife and I that we got from completely different sources that look like twins...that was fun. The third is one stick I found here, Navajo willow, with just enough of a handle to carve what was supposed to be an eagle......my wife said it looks like an eagle, I think it looks like a chicken hawk.."you know, I say, you know what I mean boy? "LOL |

| | Re: Walking Canes from the sky? Yea~ I like a natural handle on a walkn cane better than making a handle on a cane. Plus you are so right, they are so much stronger! As they say,a wife isnt always right but we sure wont tell her that!! hahheee Thks David
