Is there a book or site that I could get an Idea of style of walking cane handles there is. I know the fowl, animals etc heads as I am working on a Mallard duck head for a cane. However, I have an elder lady who would like a straight cane handle. I was thinking a reverse/upside down L shape would be the best. Never really thought of cane handles much as I carve six foot walking stick/staffs. Thank U in advance.

I know of two and Fox Chapel may have one also: 'Tom Wolfe Carves Fancy Canes' published by Schiffer (www.schifferbooks.com), and 'Stick Making - A Complete Course' published by Guild Master Craftsman Publications Ltd (England) written by Andrew Jones and Clive George. Â*GMC Publications, Castle Place, 166 High Street, Lewes, East sussex BN7 1XU United Kingdom Phone: 01273-488005 The English version is in-depth with a wide range of styles - including some that may interest you, based on your description. Â*It has lots of info on 'tradional' sticks including how to select sticks, curing, bending handles, etc. Tom's book also has canes with a wide range of ideas also. Â*I actually was lucky enough to be able to purchase one of the canes on the cover! Â*It's the scottish man on the left (if you get to see the book). Â*His book uses bed or stair spindles as the cane and he adds a carving at the top. |

Kenny there is a book 'Stick Making A Complete Course' by Andrew Jones and Clive George It is available at most stores or web sites that sell Carving tools. Shows several different sticks and the patters to cut out the handles. I think Tom Wolfe also has a book out on walking canes and some handles as well. I have cut out a couple of the handles in the book. I also jave done a dog head for a cane. You can darve most anything and attach it for a handle. I have seen eagles, ducks, all types of birds carved and used as handles, and I am going to do a duck head in a few weeks. Have also seen a pistol carved and used as a handle. Hope this helps. Check out the photo section on my Yahoo group. I have several Pics of some of mine as do some other carvers. My canes are the country style canes so just however the limb grows is the shape of the stick, so i usually do my own handles of some sort. If you are looking for something particular let me know and I will try and help. I had a lot of great people help me a few months back. Wayne |

Kenny, Look at www.carvingpatterns.com at the Laura Irish cane package. About 30 different patterns from gothic to birds but also have the many 'standard' cane shapes. I have only carved one pattern but have used the package as a reference in design many times. Ah Chip |
