Default Visit to Lonview, WA

Last weekend I went to the Lower Columbia Woodcarvers Show in Longview, WA, which is put on by the Lower Columbia Wood Carvers. There were a lot of folks participating, displaying what they carve and in many cases how they do it. There were some excellent wood turners too. Most had items for sale, including inexpensive items sold by the club to raise funds to support the show. The club also had a raffle for many outstanding carvings and had instruction sessions every hour. The Cowlitz Regional Conference Center is a great facility and the small city of Longview is beautiful at this time of year.

But the real reason I stopped at the show was to see Rick and Theresa from Little Shavers. They had most of their items available, including a book rack, so anyone could "try it before you buy it." I asked Rick for some advice again this year and received my second installment of Rick's Wisdom, including an impromptu mini carving lesson. He also sharpened up the tools I purchased from him last year. He checked my knife and said it was sharp execpt for the very end, which he remedied before I could blink. I was feeling pretty good about that knife because I sharpen that one myself. So I bought a Denny V tool and the Dockyard Micro Gouges set, went around the displays one more time and headed home.

My timing was pretty good. I broke in some new boots Tuesday with the heels of my feet and haven't worn shoes for 3 days. I think I discovered the meaning of the word "tenderfoot." Too bad I just happened to have some new tools and we all know what you do with new tools - use them!

Doug,
It was a pleasure seeing you again.

I hope you didn't mind me whittling on your carving, that is a bad habit of mine.

Rick,
No problem. I was supposed to be a santa anyway.
