Ed,

I think you're gonna have to do some artwork for this one. I listed a few links for vine photos/sketches--the first one looks to be the easiest to work with. My suggestion is to print one out. Enlarge/reduce the portion that will work the best for you to the size you want and then wrap the image with carbon paper onto the stick--mabe use twist ties to hold in place while tracing. Transfer the desired pattern and then shift/rotate as you need to and transfer again to the stick. The beauty of this is you can mix vines and take out or add in what you want--unless you're interested in doing a realistic honeysuckle, grape or bean vine. Good luck.

BTW--I found these images using Google.com. Typed in "honeysuckle" or "grape vine", etc. Then just looked until I found something that might be useful.

Hi..

When I wanted a vine on a stick I tied a peice of yarn to the top, and a bolt to the bottom of the yarn. I just gave the yarn a swing and let it wrap itself to the stick. Then I taped the bottom of the yarn to the bottom of the stick and traced the yarn with a pencil. After taking the yarn off, I then gave my line a double line to the thickness of a vine. I found some leaf patterns and used three different styles and traced those on up that vine. If you want it like a grape vine copy a grape bunch on some card stock for a template and hang a few grape bunches down here and there. Dont forget to add grape vine curls.

I had six gnomes crawling/sitting/sleeping in the vine I did on my walking stick. And 15 critters among that vine also. *grin*

Sorry I can't supply you with a sketch, but with my right arm in a sling from the rotator cuff surgery I can't do any sketcing. However check my photo album in the carver's gallery, and you'll find several photos of vines with flowers.....feel free to copy any you like. They are really pretty simple to draw and to carve.

Ed-another thought is sometimes you will see a vine stencil at wal-mart or hobby store.used by people who want to paint a vine border on their walls.

I'm almost embarrassed to admit it, but I used plastic artificial grapes and leaves as a model when carving grapes. They were very cheap, looked real and a small amount of them had several different leaves to copy.
There, my secret's out!
