Default Vacation to look for Cottonwood bark

Hi, I live in Georgia. Lots of cypress knees here but no Cottonwood bark. My wife and I are thinking about flying out west somewhere for a nice vacation. While there I would rent a vehicle and go looking for cottonwood bark. Once found I would ship it home...

Only problem, I don't know where to go. Obviously I would need to go to state or federal land if they allow picking up dead bark. If not I guess I need other ideas.

I know it sounds crazy but I need a vacation anyway and I would enjoy looking for the bark.

Any suggestions?

Greg

I don't know how far west you are going but Cottonwood trees can be found in most riparian areas and in parks. If you are going to the Rockies or the Black hills You can also find some Aspen branches and perhaps Diamond Willow while you're at it. Any court house can point you to public lands and the local carving clubs would probably be glad to help you out.

Thanks for the reply, I was not able to figure out how or where to go so I will do some more planning and go perhaps in the fall or next year..... Oh well, not as easy as I thought.

The cottonwood tree needs to have died for at least several years before it is easy to get off of the tree. The forests of northern British Columbia would be an excellent place to go hunting for bark, although it would be probably be quite a scenic hike from where you would be able to park your car to where you would find accessable bark

Montana is a great place to go and has plenty of cotton woods and carving clubs as well.
