I have been asked this question alot lately. The center finder is a simple tool, with a flat base and a hinged arm with a pencil.
Mark the area you believe is the center using a tape measure or by guessing. Place the pencil point on that area and set the tool, and the mark that area and then turn the board over and mark from the opposite side. The marks should match, if not adjust the tool to the center of the marks. This should be the center turn it over and the marks should match perfectly.
The tool can also be used as reference guide. I use it in this manner on all of my carvings.
