Hi Gang, I am always trying to think of new ways to do my woodspirits the other day while I was out for my walk in the woods I sat looking at a sumac tree while I watched the wildlife flying in and out of it. I had an idea when I saw a robin perch on one of the sumac branches. I thought wow if I took that branch and turned it upside down it would be like a tripod. with the up branches acting like legs. I like to carve sumac because of its beautiful irridesant (SP) colour a deep brownish yellow and green. Here is a picture of the carving I did from the branch use your imagination and picture the branch growing the other way. I have included a picture of the front and back of the branch of woodspirits. Hope you enjoy the pictures as much as I enjoyed carving them. Colin

Colin, Your like the energizer bunny.....Great looking idea and perfect placements with your spirits. The first use that came to my mind, is that would be a great piece out in the garden next to the pool with a "Tiki Tourch" attached to the top, would look fantastic when the tourch is glowing and a great looking piece during the day. Thanks for your creativity, keeps all our minds working overtime. You alway tweak my interests, have all ready made a few notes in my journal for when I find a similiar piece of wood. THANKS.....Coffeeman |

I've grown to anticipate what your next carving will produce and this one is no exception! Sometimes I can look at a random limb, tree, or root and immediately see what I want to do with it, then there are those pieces of wood that will sit still for many years until that "eureka" finally hits me. Most afternoons I take my bike for a 13-15 mile ride (and I go along just for the ride) and there is this one small twisted dogwood tree that I twist my head for on every ride. I know that there's something very special in that small tree, but I just can't bring myself to adding it to the drying pile until I'm ready and know what's already there to be discovered. Meantime, I always manage to steal a glance every day... every year... By the way, I really like how you put in that sort-of hidden woodspirit fellow under the rear leg! That one is as interesting as is this unique piece of sumac. Thanks!
