| | Two new Spoons Well, I finally finished a couple of projects I've been working on. Since I only used Naturoil I was able to do the finishing inside. It's still to cold out to do any staining or varnishing.
The first three views are of a loose interpretation of an oak leaf and acorn cap and is supposed to be a salt spoon, used in the old days for scooping out salt to share with important guests. You can find them made from silver in most antique shops but wood makes sense to me as a poor man's spoon.
The fourth and fifth images are of my first usuable spoon, intended to be used in the kitchen to stir, scoop, and serve meals.
Both are made from basswood and sealed with Naturoil.I especially like the grain in the bowl of the larger spoon. |

| | Re: Two new Spoons Glad to see your post, the spoons look excellent, like the style and finish..I just came back from a carving show and there were some very nice spoons there made by a lady, they are decorative not usable, suppose you could, but tooooooo nice!.....did you cut out a basic design/shape on a bandsaw and then carve away the rest?......what is the finish you speak of?....Dennis

| | Re: Two new Spoons Your spoons turned out really nice. Nothing like something in the kitchen that you're gonna use nearly every day and made with your own hands. My oldest spoon that's been in the kitchen since 1986 is a big mixing spoon that I carved from a piece of hickory while on a Suwannee River canoe trip. It's still going strong and I wouldn't take nothing for it!
Thank's for posting. |

| | Re: Two new Spoons Thanks everyone. I don't have a bandsaw so all my carvings start as a block and end up as something else. The large spoon was carved from 1/4 inch thick basswood I bought from the hobby shop in Ottawa. It was expensive but there was alot less waste this way.
Dennis - I'm not sure what Naturoil is. That is the name of the product and it was the only food safe finish I could find in town. I thought it was mineral oil but it doesn't smell or taste of anything so I'm just not sure. |
