Hi Gang, I in the process of completing two giant carvings in two 100+old maple trees. The two carvings are on the edge of a ravine so the scaffold had to be very carefully secured. It is still pretty scary looking down into that ravine. The one tree in the first picture is 23ft tall and the other carving is 22ft tall. The tree's are sugar maple and extreamly hard not to mention that I am only able to use the two foot wide platform lengthwise on one of the carvings. 90% of the carving is done with mallet and chisel I use a small Husky 144 with a carving blade to make the stop cuts and that is about it. I have posted five pictures of the carvings on www.picturetrail.com. For those guests that are new you can view most of the members of this boards carvings by going to the site the log in is 'carvers-r-us' and the password is 'carve'. The pictures of my tree spirits are in the 'woodspirit' album. They are only in the beginning stages and I will post pictures of the finished product when they are completed. As usual I welcome any comments yea or nay I am a firm believer that we can all learn from other peoples ideas. ![]() Colin www.geocities.com/partridge_ch

Colin: Looks great! Why did you pick those particular trees? Were they just there or do you have an abundance of health insurance?? Scaffolding sure looks wobbly, good luck. steve

I agree with Teri, amazing but definitely not for me either, think I'll stick with my foot tall and under size carvings that I can set in my nice comfy (and safe) recliner and do!! Be CAREFUL!! Callynne

Steve, I didnt pick the tree's they are a commission. I am a Canadian and we dont need health insurance. Not that it will stop me from serious injury. I am very careful to secure the scaffolding and it is what I do, probably because I dont have the talent to carve a small piece. I have always lived a little on the edge and it is not suprising that even in wood carving I am that way. Colin
