Default Turning Cracked Pieces

Hello, can you turn a very cracked piece of wood? I was thinking it might break once the tool hits the crack but I saw someone turning an extremely deep cracked piece, so maybe its going fast enough to turn? Thank you

Default Re: Turning Cracked Pieces

You can ,
But it depends upon the size of the crack and you need to maintain small cuts. A second option would be to use a filler inside the crack area so the tool doesn't gouge into the crack on the rotation. If your using a free floating cutter , I would first use a filler, as control is not as fine as with a tool post and the tendency to gouge is higher.
