Default Turning Basswood

Hello, how well does basswood turn? Does it break easily on the lathe?

I recently tried to turn a small piece of basswood (to make a replacement chess pawn). It broke before we could get even close to the small diameters.

I have found that it turns OK but has a rough surface. Could be me or moisture content but it sands nicely on the lathe.

I have turned several scraps to use as waste blocks and turned a few spoon blanks. In spindle orientation it works best chucked with a steady rest; it's too easy to push off a live center and cranking the pressure up turns a spur drive into a drill bit (DAMHIKT ).
