Default Turkey~ carved in burned walnut

This black chunk of wood has laid in a corner of my wood shed for about 3 years. I knew it was totally black from being in a fire but too I also knew it was a heavy wood and if I could clean and work with it I might be able to get some grains to show.

After cleaning and many hrs of sanding,it still was a gray color but it was Walnut. It now had a few grains that showed also. Behind him is a large tree,I now wished Id carved several smaller trees than that big one behind him.

It was still hard inside but with the heat,it was boiled dry which made it harder than if it was a new piece of wood that would have carved straighter and better.

This old Jake{Turkey} was fun,fun too carve that is,the cleaning was tough. Plus I enjoyed painting him. Hes relief carved & painted, 2 X 7 X 9 inches, had to mount a chip of walnut behind the back where it would sit up correctly.

In my area turkeys, fish{trout and bass} plus coons, deer, bears, etc are sought after with all the hunters that are here. Is why I love carving them plus seeing Ive not hunted in years nor fished any,its my way of enjoying the wild life with not even leaving my home! LOL

As always your thoughts or comments are welcome. Thks....Tn~

Excellent carving and paint Forrest. I like your work. You bring the animals and birds to life. You most have a painting background.

Thanks Kenny, glad you liked this old turkey. I use to paint saws, milk cans, everything from old bath tubs to thimbles for people, consignment work.

I enjoy carving and painting plus I can add alot to a carving with colors.

Thanks for your nice comment. Forrest

Hi Forest,Another great Carving and Painting. The colors are a lot more vivid now that the patch is off and looking thru a brand new eye. They say it will take about a month to be back to normal. 1 day is great, 30 days who knows. Now I can think about making chips. Enjoyed your Turkey no surprise here. Merle
