| | Re: Trout n Cedar Forest,if that wasn't wood I swear I would roll that dude in some cornmeal and down the hatch it goes.To me,fish carving is specialized, like tree carving, character carving, relief carving etc.The no. one fish carver lives here in Montana and I have seen his work and you don't learn it over night.I think you did a great job and the colors are well blended.Forest,I am a little biast but for a good ol country boy with no formal training you are in a class of your own.Davy |

| | Re: Trout n Cedar That's a fun piece, Forrest. Who couldn't enjoy wood carving if they produced such stuff. Does it smell of cedar or fish and water?

Now just look at you Merle, calling me names and such!! LOL I've not taken alot of time earlier in my life to be a funny guy, course now I have more time to just enjoy life,Merle. I was hoping you was going fishing, been a while since Ive had some good fish! The best fish comes from the Tn River, blue catfish. I dont like any other cat fish as the brown cat but only the Blue Channel cat.Its sooooooooooo Good! The best place in all of my travels is a little town outside Jackson Tn which is between Memphis & Nashville Tn. for good channel catfish!!Its a fish shack is right on the Tn River and the fish they serve the man who owns it,goes out early in the mornings to catch the catfish. Its now about 9 hrs from me,so I dont get to eat there much any more!
Talk to you later my friend,Forrest

| | Re: Trout n Cedar Awwwww Bonnie,Thanks!! I guess being a older folk-eee myself my carvings and paintings comes out that way!! I just like colors in anything I create but I hope later I can carve something and leave it in its natural wood finish. Course with the old junky wood I carve, with out any nice grains in it then I have to paint it. BUtttttttttttt I try to bring some new life to the old wood I use and carve.
I wanted this trout to be like you was looking at him under water,Im not much in carving in the round, relief is kinda my thing which allows me to create a total scene all in one piece.
I always appreciate your good thoughts Bonnie and your nice compliments!!
Thks again for ckn out this Rainbow my friend,Forrest

| | Re: Trout n Cedar Gene,to me doing any type of art work plus carving for sure, seeing I sell most of my work, you NEVER get paid for your time, is another reason I dont buy wood plus in the mtns here people love things carved from the natural items{woods} in our area.
Plus its exciting to me to start out with some old dirty, junky wood and try my best to create and carve something and paint it where you can say to yourself, Hey this old wood is breathing again! Sounds strange I know!
I more than always thank you my olde buddy for ckn out this trout and your nice compliments.
hanging in the mtns like a monkey in a tree, a tnartist, thats me!
Forrest

| | Re: Trout n Cedar Hummmm?? Davy,Im sure not a fish carver, theres guys that spend alot of time carving and getting every little detail just right in a fish carving. But my thing is creating something and you know I will stop on a dime doing 70 mph to ck out a old piece of wood laying on the road! LOL
Plus this year,I belive people wont be spending alot of money,I still will have several costly pieces but also I will have some smaller carvings and other art work.
You know where the carver, you told me that my carved golf ball looked better than his?? On a high NC Mtn?? A lady saw one of my carvings at Connie's work, she told her, have your husband come see me,I want some of his carvings in our shops up on that mtn,it has a swing bridge there also! I will take her some of my carvings, hope too really soon, right after Roan Mtn show.
Im gald you thought this Rainbow looked ok my friend,I know one thing for sure,we all miss you and your family around here!
Take care of your self and thanks for ckn out this trout and your neat thoughts & compliments. Your old carving bud,Forrest

| | Re: Trout n Cedar John Karver,John it was another fun project trying to carve this trout plus painting him is really fun for me.
I coated everything on this carving after I painted him but left some of the natural cedar wood which had some pretty grains on the boarder around the carving plus the ends and on the back I left some of the bark, you can smell the bottem and enjoy that cedar smell.
Gald you liked him John and thanks for your nice thoughts!
Forrest

| | Re: Trout n Cedar Hi All,
Really nice trout there Forrest. Keep up the excellent work! You mention in a later post that the world around us is full of color....OMG is it ever! I have been in the printing industry now for 42 years...done just about everything you can do to paper with ink or bindery equipment. I have mangled a sheet of paper more than once but I have also done some quite respectable work too! Of late I have become the prime "ink maker" for my company, which means I have at my disposal 1100+ pre-tested formulas and an X-Rite spectro photometer that means if an object will hold still long enough for it to be scanned I can probably make a reasonable color match of it. If I remember correctly the 4-color printing process can reproduce only about 60% of what the human eye can perceive. That's where I get to shine is that other 40%. Spot color!!! Why the other day I matched a color sample that was a smear of paint that had dried on a piece of T-shirt material...LOL!
