| | Trout n Cedar I had this smaller log of cedar and cut it into different pieces. This Rainbow trout is 2 5/8 X 8 inches carved in cedar and painted with acrylic paints and a gloss finish which adds to the whole scene being in water.
Your thoughts and comments are always welcome.Thks' Forrest

| | Re: Trout n Cedar Nice little carving, Forrest, I like it!
I have a standing discussion with other fish carvers and even taxidermists. If you are a snorkeller or scuba diver you know that fish when viewed under water are NOT shiney. That slick look does not appear until a fish is taken out of the water and the slime coating then shows as a shiney surface.
I think the misrepresentation is due to taxidemists originally finishing their fish with varnish to help preserve the skin. Back then gloss varnish was the norm, hence the "shiney" appearance of the mount. It looks like carvers simply adapted that "mounted look" and finished their fish in gloss.
All my natural painted fish are finished in satin and it gives a much more realistic look of the subject as seen under water. I do get told "It would look better glossy.", but I'll stick to the more natural soft look.
A good argument FOR the glossy look, is marketability, however. Follow the money, hehehehe!

| | Re: Trout n Cedar Sharon,I dont know about all the experience?? My thing is just trying to carved what I like. With other art work plus carvings,I do over a 100-125 things easy in a year. Course I have the time that Im sure you dont have,I create something every day or try too. I like to carve something one day and paint it the next morning, course thats smaller items. Spending 4-5 days on any carving drives me crazy!!{er} LOL
Im gald you thought this trout looked ok and I thank you for ckn him out plus your nice compliments! Forrest

| | Re: Trout n Cedar Super idea, very nice carving and painting. I once painted a trout on canvas, and getting that side color painted and blended isn't the easest to do. Kathy | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
