Seeing the posts by NYFIREMAN,reminded me of a piece I was commissioned to do by Runners World Magazine. They are 2 trophies for the first male and female runners who were either firefighters or police officers, who ran in the race on New Years eve. This was the New years following the 9/11 attack. I originally turned down the commission, which I really wanted to do, due to prior committments, and their time constraints ,one and a half weeks.I had given them a price, and within a half hour they called back and doubled it and asked,, "now will you do it?" A few calls later and my schedule was cleared ,with a few customers saying,"You have to do this piece,,,,I'll wait,"and the rest is history.I've also put shots in the carver galleries where you can see a better close up.

Geez! I've run in so many marathon's including the Marine Corps in D.C. and the Shamrock in Virginia Beach, but I never got anything that nice! I place firefighter's and police officer's alongside the soldier's in our military... right at the top of America's best! Thanks for posting.

Terrific pieces Mark, What kind of wood did you use for the hats. and pardon me for asking, but what were they thinking only giving you a week and a half?????? I am always amazed at non carvers ideas about how quickly something can be created. They have no idea.......... But somehow you managed beautifully. Ps. If I lived in your area I would be begging you to take me on as an apprentice. |

Thank you everyone.Considering that 9/11 just happened, Runners World I guess wanted something unique to honor the first responders who would be in the race in New York city on New Years Eve.Till they contacted me,and when they needed the pieces for photo shoots and whatnot,I only had the 1 1/2 weeks. For who this was really for ,I did whatever I had to do to get them done,,,for me it was a once in a lifetime opportunity. Besides the fact I can carve pretty fast. The pieces are basswood, clear laquer, and the base is walnut. I like seeing the grain and the color contrast. The firemans hat is (if I remember correctly) about 12 " long x 6"high and the police hat is about 8" round.None of the local F.D 's had helmets like N.Y. city uses, but they were able to furnish me with catalogs for reference to carve the ones they use ( they are actually leather,,, I didn't know that) as well as the police hat. This was a job I'll always treasure. By the way,,,Happy New Year everyone! P.S.Thanks Susieq, and to anyone else out there,,,my shop is always open,I'm always looking for carvers, and if I can ever be of help to anyone I'll share whatever I have or know. We're from all parts of the country, with a variety of talents and know how ,but we're as close as a phone call or e-mail away.... Last edited by mark yundt; 12-31-2006 at 07:13 PM. |
