I just did an online search and found the spray adhesive that was mentioned - it's called 3M Spray Mount. Thanks so much to everyone who jumped in there with such wonderful ideas.

I was at the Michigan roundup a couple of years ago, and we use dspray on adhesive to glue the cip carving patterns onto the wood. After carving, he used somethig called goo gone or something like that, and all of the adhesive just wiped right off.

The 3M stuff works well... If you don't like adhered paper on your carving there is a transfer paper made by Saral that you can get in white and yellow as well as black. The nice thing about it over chalk is that the design stays on much better. White Stabilo All pencils are also great for marking on any surface - again it stays where you want it.

While at Hobby Lobby today, I saw white transfer paper...bet that would work well on the walnut.

i use plain old rubber cement to put my chipcarving patterns on the wood.
The paper peels off pretty easily and I remove the glue with a piece of crepe rubber that is used to clean sanding belts.
