| | Top five carving books I had started to reply to the thread on carving an eagle when the idea for a new thread occurred to me in the form of a question. What are the five top of the list carving books in your collection? I want to ask this of the members and give it some thought as to my response. |

| | Re: Top five carving books Since, I keep a computerized "Card Catalog" of my library; it was fairly easy for me to go through my collection. I have listed the following (in alphabetical order) as my top five: Corbett, Lori; Carving Award Winning Songbird Although I do not carve songbirds, this is an excellent reference on carving feathers and for painting any bird. Evert, Laura; Wolves This book is an excellent reference on wolves allowing design involving movement, body position and painting. Lindstrand, Doug; Bear, The Ultimate Artist’s Reference As the title states (might question the “ultimate” in there) this book should be in any bear carver's library. Excellent detail on the various species. Rogers, Denny, The Illustrated Bald Eagle Although, technically, not in my collection as yet, I have examined this book and would make the same comments as I made for “Bear, The Ultimate Reference” and “Wolves”. Scholz, Floyd; Birds of Prey A good reference for carving birds of prey; but, should be supplemented with other references since only one bird of each species is used in the photos. Carving and painting information is extremely useful.
The following received honorable mention: Breining, Greg; Return of the Eagle Excellent photos of eagles in various poses. Some very good close ups that allow the carver/painter to use them in detail work. Gieck, Charlene; Eagles For Kids I have started looking in the children’s books for references on specific animals. This book is designed to introduce eagle anatomy to children. There are close-ups of bills and talons that make it especially useful. Scholz, Floyd; Owls Same info as his book on birds of prey. Pezzenti, John, Jr.; Shooting Bears, The Adventures of a Wildlife Photographer The close up photos of the head would make this book worthwhile; but, when the rest of the photos are added it becomes even more useful. Used in conjunction with “Bear, The Ultimate Artist’s Reference”, I feel comfortable in carving any bear I want. |

| | Re: Top five carving books Paul, why not Dave Letterman's top ten? Five is tough. I'm going to cheat. My top five books for decorative or architectural carving: "Woodcarving techniques & designs" by Mike Davies. "Carving architectural detail in wood: the classical tradition" by Frederick Wilbur. "Essential woodcarving techniques" by Dick Onians. "Elements of woodcarving" by Chris Pye. "How to carve wood: a book of projects and techniques" by Richard Butz.
My most useful book has been "Carving Spoons" by Shirley Adler. I've carved more than 100 spoons for gifts, mostly from her book. I owe her a big thank you.
A book that really fired my imagiantion for animal carving is "Carving Nature" by Frank Fox-Wilson. |

| | Re: Top five carving books My frist carving book was Whittling and Woodcarving by E. J. Tangerman. It's been a great inspiration.
Landscapes in relief by Lora S. Irish. Great book, I learn how to do reliefs from it.
Carving the Human Face by Jeff Phares. Good book very helpful.
That's all of my "library" that I've put to good use.
