Hey Shamey is a Western PA carver. Says he had an article printed in issue #5 of WCI, Christmas '98. Rick needs to check out the Hobo Nickel section. He even carves pits. Good find there Ron.

Someone directed me to this site to answer some questions regarding the tools used for toothpick carving. I have had some experience at it and would be glad to answer any questions you might have.
The best tools that I have found I had to make myself. I found that if you take a broken piece of razor blade or scalpul blade or any other kind of thin high carbon steel and shape it into your favorite carving blade shape you can bed it in any type of hardwood handle and put a good edge on it , it works pretty well. I use a piece of buttonwood driftwood that I pick up off of the beaches in Fla. to bed the blades in but any hardwood will do. You can also make small chisels out of sewing needles or steel dental burrs. With a variety of shapes of chisels and blades, you too can give it a try!
If you have any specific questions I would be happy to help you.

Bill,

If you log out, you'll see this paragraph:

"If this is your first visit, be sure to check out the FAQ by clicking the link above. You may have to register before you can post: click the register link above to proceed. To start viewing messages, select the forum that you want to visit from the selection below. "

If you click on the word "register" it will take you to the screen to register.

You can pass this on to Shamey!

Dentist picks have been used to carve small Items like pencils and toothpick. There is a local dentist who instead of throwing the picks and burs away, giving them to local carvers.

To answer Dave's question WHY? Because they are there. I guess.

Guess i am going to have to check with a few people that i know who have kids
and take them to the denist

I have hade false teeth for over 30 years now
and last time time I had set of teeth made was at a dental lab
and that was over 10 years ago

I agree with Dave
My eye sight would not let me do that
wonder if I could get a big enough magnifier
My hands will not allow me to do anything that small

Can't carve pencils either
they are too small also
