Default tool storage

Beginning to acquire a few tools, and attend a local carving meeting once a week, getting the tools there and back as become a bit of a challenge for me, can anyone recommend a good means of transportation for the tools, the rolls don't look like they carry all the extra items, just tools, figured maybe a tool box?...Dennis

I had the same problem growing beyond my fishing woodcarving box. I laughed when I first saw "The Bucket Box" but I wound up buying one and can't think of a better way to store and transport my tools. I bought if from www.woodchipshop.com and got excellant response. I bought the one that holds Palm and full size gouges. Had to remove some edge wood material at three holes in order to accept some of my larger tools but not a problem.

Question Re: tool storage

Xsailer,

I'm really glad you posted something about the bucket box. I've been eyeing it for awhile now. I have a few questions for you if you don't mind. How many palm tools does the one you have hold and how many full size ones can you get in it too. Also, when you have it full of tools do you have a problem in seeing which tool (for example a palm tool) you want next or do you have to mark the handle somehow to know what is what? Thanks,

Question Re: tool storage

Mark,

It looks like you too have one of those bucket boxes in your picture behind your toolbox. I was just wondering what you think of it also.

top has 24 holes to accept tightly placed palms. I have 16 palms, 7 assorted Denny gouges and 7 smaller holes to accept dockyard micros size gouges. Lower ring has 24 locations for my mixture of intermediate and full size tools.

You can see the palm blades through the lower level handles because I have mostly intermediate size tools. At the locations I have Henry Taylors full size I can't see the palm blades but I located the Denny tools there and because they are easier to pick from their handles. After a while I started locating specific tools at a general location for ease of quickly finding them. My Bucket Box holder is almost full now so I may need another one in the future.

Dennis,
It's a common problem, especially if you need to gather your carving tools to take with you to club meetings or carving workshops...what to do with your strop, diamond stones, rifflers, thumb guards, carving glove, bandaids, epoxy, etc.

Around here, we usually start with a simple Walmart tacklebox--of whatever size you need for all the tools you have (plus, thinking ahead to what you think you'll add this year!!)The top opens so you can put odds and ends up there, plus drawers that you can take the dividers out for longer tools---plus slots just right for a couple of palm tools. Be sure to buy some clear plastic tubing (it comes in different sizes at hardware stores) and cut pieces to cover the shanks and fit down on the top of the handle to protect your hard-won sharp edges.

If you have quite a bit of walking with your toolbox, you can even find toolboxes on wheels with handles like luggage does nowadays, to make your trip easier. It's surprising how heavy a few tools can be, especially when you add whatever carving you're working on at the time. I've got a 30-year old fold-up rolling luggage cart that I can put my toolbox on with a bungee cord if I'm going far.

So good luck finding something that will work--it changes every so often when you add more "stuff."
