Default Tiny wood chains

last night at the carving club I saw a tiny wood chain made by one of the members who had passed. No one there knows how he carved it. the links measure two links for one inch so its a lot of detail work. Anyone have any idea of how he did it? I have done chains before, so i know the basics, but nothing this small. If anyone has any ideas let me know thanks.
