Default Thinking about starting a carving club

I'm thinking about starting a carving club in my town and was wondering if anyone had any suggestions. My idea would be to keep it informal and meet at the library or community center and carve for a couple of hours each week. Anyone ever tried starting anything like this before? I could use some tips.

Regards,
John H.

John,
There are a couple of carvers putting on a class at our local community center in hopes to build intrest and to establish our local group. I think they have close to 15 signed up.

What sorts of feelers did you put out? I live in a small town and was thinking about running an add in the town newsletter and posting a notice at the local library.

Ad in the paper and some posts on bulletin board, plus a local internet ad site...no response

John, If it was me who was in your shoes, I'd think about starting with some free wood carving lessons. What I mean is, find some one (maybe yourself) who is willing and able to teach/coach folks in beginning and intermediate carving. Test the waters by advertizing the lessons. Appeal to beginners and experienced whittlers and carvers. Tom H

You want to go to the local Boyscout troop, talk to the scout master about showing the boys a little carving just to see if they would like it. Little things most likely will get bigger. Skip

The class was first thought of for seniors, and the local community center advertised to its senior members while they were taking part in their already schduled activities. It just took off from there.
