Default thin cyanoacrlate glue

Al Groncki mentions this in the latest woodcarving illustrated as good for strengthening delicate carving areas.
What is it, brand names, where do you get it ?
Sounds very helpful, thank you Al !
Just what us beginners need.

Get it just about anywhere. Dollar Store, Walgreens, etc. Any of the thin stuff. If you want bigger containers for less money, look for Hobby Shops for model airplane supplies. They use a bunch of it.

If you don't have access to a hobby shop in your area, go to "TOWER HOBBIES" on the internet. They are one of the largest on line hobby shops in the world.....I get all my CA glue from them....and you might also want to get some "kicker". This is a liquid that comes in a spray bottle, it makes the glue set up INSTANTLY!!!....of course, if your fingers are in the way, they will be glued together also, so then you use some de bonder to get un stuck....all from Tower.
There is also thick CA for filling gaps....I built many R/C model airplanes using just CA and epoxy glues.
Hard ware stores sell CA but only in small quantities. Tower Hobbies sells theirs in 2 oz. bottles....there is a lot in a 2 oz bottle...if you don't use a lot at a time, it's best to keep the bottle in a crisper drawer of your refrigerator, to keep it fresh.
Moisture is what helps set the CA glue, I some times lick the part with my tongue before I hit it with the thin CA....but the kicker is easier to control.

I have been told that Walmart sells the large 2 oz bottle. I buy it at the dollar stores in the small tubes. I found it for 85cents for 5 tubes just the other day. I use both the thin and the gel type super glue. You can use the thin and sprinkle on baking soda to harden it. You can sand the baking soda to smooth it.
I use it over wire to mount carvings, make bird feet and hummingbird beaks.

CA glue got it's start in Viet Nam as a way for the medics to close wounds until the patient could get back to the field hospital. However, being as when I've accidently glued my own skin with the stuff, I know that it hurts like Hell as it burned my skin.....so I thinking that maybe the Army medics had a differant type of CA made just for the medical people...I guess I'll have to ask my son, as he's a Navy doctor.

Hi Folks: Just a word of caution when using "super glue" to strenthen weak pieces or repair broken pieces in a carving still "in progress" ~ I've been told by fellow carvers at the local club that this stuff does a real number on your knife or gouge egdes...dulls them instantly. Other than that it's great stuff.

Chimo,

Leslie

I noticed after I had my quad by-pass that the surgeons glued my skin back together - I was expecting staples or stitches and the consequent pain from it pulling, but the glue was painless by the time I woke up.

Dullknife, are you sure you aren't using Grizzly glue and not crazy glue? Grizzly glue needs to be damp on one side, and I glue back cuts on my fingers all the time with cyanoacrylate and it doesn't burn?

I use crazy glue to toughen or strengthen a piece of wood now and then, but only after I am completely through carving sanding etc.......and use sparingly, it will buildup on the wood making it a very rough surface if you are not careful.
