Default Are these woods food safe for spoons?

Can anyone tell me if I can make usable spoons from Mahogony, Teak or White Oak? I know mahogony and teak dust can cause lung problems.

I guess my question should be; Are these woods food safe?

Wanda

As any person can have an allergy to a specific wood, it's hard to say. However, these may help you:

Hi Wanda,

IMHO When a spoon is completed, assuming that it is saturated with a safe oil and kept oiled, it should be fine - the finish provides a barrier of sorts. There is no dust or direct contact with the skin on raw wood.

Thanks,

Merv

I have spoons made from all of those woods in my kitchen I and can attest the fact that I am not dead yet
Here is a super fun link! I adore it still!
Handmade wooden spoons and treenware utensils by Allegheny Harvest Treenware, LLC

Woods I use are Cherry, Nutmeg, Manzanita, Walnut,Oak (lots of oak), Maple, Willow, Birch, Alder, Mahogany,Cedar, POplar, Ash. So MANY choices!
Have fun!

I liked that site Keoma wish they told what wood they used. That push pull oven rack tool I have been making out of scrap wood and giving them away never thought of trying to sell one.

Thanks Claude, I hadn't found those sites before.

Keoma, That was a very interesting site. Talk about ideas! But what was that Yin Yang thing? cheater chopsticks and a fork? Or a deadly hair fork?

Robert, I bought one of those push pull rack tools, still use it. Never thought of selling them myself either.

Thanks Wanda

I actually called them and asked. They use mainly Cherry and Maple. Super nice folks. I made the oven wrack tool shaped like a fish...with gills and a mouth? They sell super quick at fests

Ha! Me too. My Grandmother in law made me an authentic chinese meal complete with chopsticks, she finally gave up and handed me a fork!
